Welcome Back To Jack’s Journal!

Hey y’all, it’s Jack here! Back at it again with a weekly update regarding everything pickleball…

Before We Dive In…

This edition is sponsored by ellesse

A UK-based clothing brand with a rich history of sponsoring tennis legends like Chris Evert, ellesse brings a touch of sports heritage to our pickleball community. Having enjoyed their endorsement for almost a year, I can personally attest to the exceptional design and quality of their products. For those seeking stylish pickleball attire, ellesse is a top-notch choice that combines performance and flair.

Now Let’s Get Into Things…

1. APP Punta Gorda Recap

While the pickle world is in shambles, the APP is still chugging along. Last weekend, they completed their first tour stop in Punta Gorda, Florida, and other than the rain delays, it was a pretty well-run tournament…

The first day I arrived at the courts at 8 a.m., anticipating a 10 a.m. start time, except the courts were soaking wet with puddles. So unfortunately, we got pushed back until 1… then until 3… then until 5… And we didn’t start our first match until 6:30 at night!

The APP was forced to change the format to one game to 15, as well as eliminating the back draw…

Now obviously isn’t the APP’s fault since you can’t control the weather, and honestly, they did a great job righting the ship from the original weather issues.

Regardless, I didn’t mind many of the technical changes that they made for the 2024 season, and I am still really looking forward to the rest of this year!

Also, super stoked for my new summer HQ at The Fort in Boca Raton. This facility is going to be the powerhouse of Florida pickleball…

2. The Placebo Effect… in Sports

In case you didn’t know, I’ve always been a huge nerf for human psychology, and recently I’ve been diving deep into the Placebo Effect

The Placebo Effect: When a person experiences a real and positive change in their condition or performance simply because they believe they are receiving a treatment or intervention.

While placebos are typically associated with medical treatments, the concept can also be applied to sports, including pickleball, to leverage the power of mindset and belief in performance improvement. Here is one unique way that I have managed to implement the Placebo Effect in order to positively impact and enhance my performance on the court…

Confidence Boosting through Equipment:

Statistics show that I can hand you a new pickleball paddle and say that its better than the one you have. So you play a few games and fall in love with it. Then I take the paddle back and show you that it is literally the same paddle that you have been hitting with… just reskinned with a different graphic.

Even though you know that chewing gum or wearing your favorite shirt won’t truly enhance your pickleball game, the confidence derived from this belief can translate into improved play on the court.

This is also one of the ways to explain why superstitions are so common in sports as well. In this avenue, there is no one more iconic than Rafa Nadal himself.

3. How to Go Viral

I’ve been lucky enough to grow my account from 0 to 7k followers in less than a year… And while it took hours a day editing videos, posting content, responding to comments, and a little bit of luck, there are certainly ways to streamline the “virality” process.

  1. Gain inspo (inspiration) from parallel sports and niches. Do some tennis ideas easily transfer over to tennis? The answer is YES!

    1. One of my most viral pieces of content comes from the tennis idea of using hand signals. I simply changed the hand signals to how they apply in pickleball instead.

      1. DO NOT COPY AND STEAL CONTENT! Use their original idea, AND add your own twist onto it.

        1. I know countless creators in the pickleball niche that actually steal content… and not only is it wrong morally, it is the worst thing you could do for your brand and the relationships that come alongside it.

  2. Use CapCut. Assuming you have an iPhone 13 or up, there is ZERO need to invest in a camera off the bat. Even if you are filming YouTube videos, your phone is more than enough…

    1. The idea behind the video is 100X more important than the quality. Don’t get me wrong, good quality is a big plus, but it is not a necessity for viral content.

    2. For short form content, use a faster editing style so viewers are less likely to swipe away from boredom.

      1. Bonus points if you use a trending audio…

Well, hope you guys got some value out of this, and I’m looking forward to keeping this alive!

See y’all next week,

-Jack Munro
