Welcome Back to Jack's Journal
Hey y’all, it’s Jack here! Recently, life has presented me with many unique opportunities and due to these new commitments, I’ve been super slammed lately. Unfortunately, with this change, I am going to change the newsletter to twice a month.
Thank you for understanding and I look forward to sharing the news with you as time goes on!
Before We Dive In…
This edition is sponsored by ProXRHaving tried many paddles before landing on ProXR, I can personally attest to their quality and performance. Not only do they make exceptional paddles, but they also have a world-class team behind the brand. My personal choice, "The Standard" 14mm, embodies remarkable grit alongside a perfect balance of power and responsiveness. |
Now Let’s Get Into Things…
1. Life Update
Not much to update here, but let me say: It is so annoying that there’s only 24 hours in a day… With pickleball taking up substantially more time and effort as the days go on, it has obviously become much harder to stay on top of school.
I’m definitely super thankful for all of the resources that UT Austin has to offer in order to keep me on the right track. For anybody who is a full-time student plus doing something else on top of it — big kudos to you. |
2. EQ vs IQ
Recently, I’ve been diving deep into Emotional Intelligence and the Intelligence Quotient, and I genuinely believe that y’all are going to love what I have been researching…
Just as background, here are two key definitions:
EQ (Emotional Intelligence): The ability to manage both your own emotions and understand the emotions of people around you.
Understanding, using, and managing your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and defuse conflict
IQ (Intelligence Quoitient): A measure of a person’s reasoning ability.
Gauges how well someone can use information and logic to answer questions or make predictions
IQ tests begin to assess this by measuring short- and long-term memory. They also measure how well people can solve puzzles and recall information they’ve heard - and how quickly.
Emotional intelligence (EQ) can be more easily altered than intelligence quotient (IQ) due to its nature of being more malleable and trainable.
In a study done by Science.org “about 62% of the individual differences in academic achievement—at least when it came to GCSE scores—could be attributed to genetic factors”
While IQ is largely influenced by genetics and remains relatively stable throughout life, EQ can be developed and enhanced through learning and practice. This is because EQ is primarily based on skills related to understanding and managing emotions, which can be improved with effort and experience.
Here's a breakdown of why EQ is often more important than IQ and how this helps the average person:
Malleability: EQ can be developed and improved over time through self-awareness, practice, and learning new skills. This means that even if someone starts with a lower EQ, they can work on enhancing it to manage stress more effectively and improve decision-making.
Social and Emotional Skills: EQ encompasses skills such as self-awareness, empathy, and social awareness, which are crucial for success in relationships and the workplace. These skills can be learned and honed, leading to better interpersonal interactions and overall well-being.
Professional Success: Many companies now recognize the importance of EQ in the workplace and consider it as important as technical skills. Individuals with high EQ are often better at communication, teamwork, and leadership, which are crucial for career advancement.
3. The 3 Pillars of Engagement
Content, Community, Converse
Whether you are an individual or a company, engagement is the foundation of your business. These three unique avenues are important and creating an engaged audience. However, one pillar is taller than the others…
Why is Content #1?
Content is King!
Content is often considered the most important pillar of engagement in social media because it serves as the foundation for building a strong presence and attracting an audience.
Here's how it leads to a compounding effect for the other two pillars:
Content attracts and retains an audience: Compelling content is what initially attracts people to your social media channels. Whether it's informative, entertaining, or inspirational, content that resonates with your audience encourages them to follow you and stay engaged. This is crucial for building a community around your brand.
Content drives conversation: High-quality content sparks conversations among your audience members. When people find your content interesting or thought-provoking, they are more likely to share their thoughts, ask questions, and engage with others in the community. This interaction helps to deepen the sense of community and keeps people coming back for more.
Content fosters community: As people engage with your content and each other, a sense of community begins to form. They start to see themselves as part of a larger group with shared interests and values. This feeling of belonging is powerful and can lead to a more loyal and engaged audience.
